In viewing the history of the modern Chinese literature, the writing of the historical novel and the study on this kind of novel are poor compared with the other genres. It does not mean, however, that the tradition of the histoical novel which had been splendid in the period of the ancient literature has come to nothing. Modern historical novel has developed through the critical succession of the tradition of the ancient historical novel and borrowing the western literay models. This study focuses on the 1920's which is the first step in the development of the modern historical novel.
The western thoughts which have flowed into China since the late in the 19th century and the critical attitude toward the traditional thoughts led writers into writing historical novels. In addition to these factors, Hu-shi(胡適)’s introduction of the theory of the short story in the western sense of the word changed Zhang hui style(章回體), the traditional style of the Chinese novel, into that of short story.
New novelists also whose activities played active parts in the transitional period changing from the ancient time to modern swept off the traditional notion of the history and the novel, and produced the historical novel in the modern sense of the word. Upon above foundations the historical novels in the 1920's can be classified into several groups according to the theme each group represents. The first group includes Luxun(魯迅)'s Fu-tian(補天) and Zhu-jian(鑄劍). Author's sense of the times is embodied in these novels; the former is with the 5ㆍ4 movement period, and the latter with the 3ㆍ18 incident in 1926 as their setting. The second group covers Yu-Dafu(鬱達夫)'s Cai shi ji(采石磯) and Lu-xun's Ben yue(奔月). In these novels, authors refleced their own situations in life. The third group contains Gwo-Moruo'(郭沫若)s Han gu gwan(函穀關) and Qiyuanli you yang(漆園吏遊梁) which reflect the author's critical attitude toward one of the Chinese representative thoughts, the philosophy of Lao-zi(老子) and Zhuang-zi(莊子). Thus it can be said that the Chinese historical novel since the 1920's succeeded the tradition of the ancient historical novel, and at the same time taught the later historical novelists the experiential lessons in the development of the modern historical novel.
