Former researches on ethical problems in 『Liao Zhai』 were most focused on whether Pu Songling was for or against the traditional ethics. Now we can deepen the probe by looking into an valuable problem, which is, how Pu Songling dealt with the ethical conflicts in his book?
Pu Songling offered two ways. Firstly, he confirmed one side and negated the opposite, because he would rather treat the conflicts objectively and rationally according to the standard of “righteousness” than be constrained by “the three cardinal guides”. This judgment based on the Confucian concepts of "the right of adjustment when putting the ideal into practice", which perfected the traditional ethics. Secondly, since this judgment still had a kind of ethical omissions, Pu Songling offered a magic innocent figure by using specific artistic means, which led to the great artistic accomplishments of his book.
