The scholarship on the Dream of the Red Chamber(紅學, Hong-xue, Redology) had been led by the scholars in the mainland of China until the middle of 20th century. After that, however, Redology in the United States has also developed in accordance with the development of sinology in the States.
During 1960th and 1970th, the studies and the critics on the Dream of the Red Chamber in the United States had been doing in the methodolgy of comparative literature, new criticism and structuralism. They include The Classic Chinese Novel: a Critical Introduction, The Dream of the Red Chamber: A Critical Study, The Narrative Art of Red Chamber Dream, Masks of Fiction in Dream of the Red Chamber: Myth, Mimesis and Persona, and Archetype and Allegory in the Dream of the Red Chamber. Since 1990, Redology in the United States have been developing more and more. Many redologists in the States have been doing research about the Dream of the Red Chamber in new literary and cultural theory. Among them, the worthful researches are as the following: Rereading the stone: Desire and the Making of Fiction in Dream of the Red Chamber, Ideal and Actual in the Story of the Stone, The Chinese Garden as Lyric Enclave: a Generic Study of the Story of the Stone, The Story of the Stone: Intertextuality, Ancient Chinese Stone Lore, and the Stone Symbolism in Dream of the Red Chamber, Water Margin, and the Journey to the West, Enchantment and Disenchantment: Love and Illusion in Chinese Literature, Literati and Self-Re/Presentation: Autobiographical Sensibility in the Eighteenth-century Chinese Novel, Competing Discourses: Orthodoxy, Authenticity, and Engendered Meanings in Late Imperial Chinese Fiction, and Desire and Fictional Narrative in Late Imperial China etc.
Redology in the mainland of China had a tendency to do the historical research on the novel such as author, text, and the social and political meaning of text, whereas redologists in the United States applied the various literary methods to the novel. Thus the studies in the United States helped us to perceive the aesthetic features of the novel.
