This article is an essential approach of the progress of literature in Lingnan area China (including Canton province and Hong Kong, Macao territory) as a branch in the long history of Chinese literature.
First, we had made a simple analysis on the development of the genres in Lingnan area with a chronological order from the ancient Han dynasty to the end of Qing dynasty and the beginning of the Repulic of China in 20th century, covering the area of Lingnan - known as Canton and Hong Kong, today.
Secondly, we had made an analysis on several characteristics shown on Lingnan literature with geographical and historical points of view. We discovered that the literary society in Lingnan area has a mutual relationship between its internal and external world, which means there always involved a great deal of vigorous elements in most of the Lingnan literary works although under the great influence of Chinese culture, this makes Lingnan literature different from the rest literary societies of China.
Thirdly, we had put a view with an emphasis on the roles which had been played by Lingnan literature. We discovered that the literary men and scholars of Lingnan area often played a role as of a protector or reformer whenever there was a political chaos explored in the northern regime or an academic dispute happened around the academic society in the northern part of China. Specially, the achievements of the modern Cantonese lettermen as Kang Youwei, Huang Zunxian, Liang Qichao who had played an important role in the progress of development in China's modernization during the period of the end of 19th and the beginning of 20th century.
Finally, we had analyzed the future of Cantonese literature and look forward on Hong Kong to play a role as of the Renaissance, to recover the culture of the whole area of southern China.
This article is only an introduction for the whole history of literature in Lingnan area, and had basically referred the academic work "The History of Lingnan Wenxue (Cantonese Literature)", edited by professor Chen Yongzheng (Zhongshan University, Canton), with an aim of getting attention from the international academic society who is still unconscious with Cantonese Literature.
