It is necessary to secure plastic deformation capacity to improve energy absorption performance in plastic design of steel structures. One method for this purpose is restraining local buckling for the improvement of that capacity of wide flange beams which do not meet the limit of width-thickness ratio for the seismically compact section. This paper presents the result of loading tests and limit analysis on moment-rotation behavior of wide flange beam, and discusses on the fundamental notions of local buckling restraint. New restraint method of local buckling is proposed by evaluation of results through the cyclic loading tests and the limit analysis. And the validity and availability of proposed method verify clear-cut lines.
