From the autumn of 1793 to the early spring of 1794, the popular festivals reached the peak. In these festivals, there were the festival of the Reason, the cult of the martyr of the Liberty, the festival of the recovery of Toulon and the festival of the death of the King. The character of these festivals was the resurrection of the custom of the carnival : the violent simulations, the autodafes, the parades of the donkey with a bishop’s miter and the parodic disguise, etc.
Because of this character, the popular festivals have received the rigorous criticism. But the violence and the parody of these festivals were the unique expression of the people to represent the idea of the new society and the radical revolution. By means of these festivals, the people exposed their joy and their opinion antigovernmental. The popular festivals of the French Revolution seem to be an opportunity to know the expression and the culture of the people in the French Revolution.
