It is difficult to confine the historiographical world of Le Roy Ladurie in a certain histoiographical trend, because his territory has moved away from the socio-economic history through the anthropological history to the cultural history. We had better understand his historical thinking by way of the conception of the total history. The Peasants of Languedoc, his doctoral thesis, is an adventure of the total history, and his following works are its complement. In other words, his thesis is a seedbed where are sown the anthropological history, the lecture of the history in the literature, and an idea of “the civilizing process” dear to Elias. That is the reason why his historiographical world is esteemed to be “open”, and we can consider him as witness of the contemporary historiography.
For all the transition, his anthropological or cultural works are not floating, but based on the solid foundation of the socio-economic history and the quantitative history. This fact serves as a lesson. The cultural history and the microhistory which are in vogue actually will give us only a superficial interest unless they are associated with the socio-economic history, the political and institutional history. This kind of history is no other than the “partial” history. But, as Lucien Febvre said, isn’t the history in principe the total history? The cultural history or the microhistory which is far from the total history is not qualified to be called as history. Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie is also an witness of this prosecution.
