CAE techniques for durability analysis are essential support tools to the design process for automotive parts. The reliability and the improvement of engine durability analysis can be achieved when the results such as residual stress distribution are considered with the structural analysis. In this study, the residual stress distribution was simulated during heat treatment of a cylinder head for diesel engine. The thermal history of the cylinder head was measured to calculate heat transfer coefficient during quenching and validate the simulation results. The residual stresses were also measured after heat treatment and the calculated residual stress distribution was in good agreement with the measured values. Considering the calculated residual stresses distribution as initial stresses, the cylinder head/block compound structural analysis was carried out to evaluate the durability of the cylinder head during engine running condition. It was possible to evaluate the effects of residual stresses on the engine durability quantitatively by this procedure. This integration between process simulation and structural simulation is expected to make a contribution to the reduction of design period and the increase of engine durability being applied in the early design stage.
