This paper examines the female disease in the new woman fiction focusing on the case of Edith and Evadne in Sarah Grand’s The Heavenly Twins. Through the cases of Edith and Evadne, Grand constructs a counter-narrative to the major discourse of Victorian medicine, which is further accentuated by the dual narrative structure of the text. The device of melodrama and the dual narrative structure lead the readers to pay attention to the discrepancies between feminist and medical readings of female breakdown.
The mental breakdowns of Edith and Evadne derive from the lack of intellectual and professional opportunities, compounded by medical and sexual oppression, which damages women’s physical and mental health. Their conflicts dramatize the complex relation between the problem of sexuality, marriage and the Victorian cultural code on the female disease. In particular, Edith’s revolt of fantasy and Evadne’s retreat into daydream destabilize the surface structure and meaning of the text.
Grand’s representation of female disease is used as a significant device to explore the relation between the medical discourses on female disease and the rising feminist thoughts at the end of the nineteenth century. The text leads the reader to consider the discourse of female hysteria and madness not as a matter of female biological organization but as that of legal, social and economic position.
