In the field of cooling systems, due to increased demand for small and medium size cooling machines including residential use, electric power demand becomes highest in summer. This study focuses on the development and evaluation of a high efficiency absorption heat pump which can be applied to a direct gas fired, double effect system with 144㎾ nominal cooling capacity. The performance of the absorption heat pump is investigated through both cycle simulation and experiment to obtain the system characteristics with the inlet temperatures of cooling water, chilled water and gas input flow rates. The relative efficiency of the different cycles was studied. The experimental data and simulation results show that higher COP(coefficient of performance) was obtained with mixed flow cycle. Only a five percent difference in the cycle performance data was obtained from the comparison between the experiment and the cycle simulation results. As a result of this study, the optimum design conditions were determined based on the operating conditions and the COP.
