This thesis is written to study on the tree in the Korean-novel. There are a little novel to take pregnant significance in the Korean-novel.
First of all, the tree in the Hwang Soon-won's novels imply rich significance. It means the orphan of the Korean-war in <The grafted child> and it means the youngman's wounded spirit in the Korean-war in <The tree stand on a cliff>. Above all, it means the circle of nature in <The Cain's descendant>
The tree in the Lee Cheong-joon's novels imply a birthplace, a mother or nature. <The story about a rain-bird> is the prototype of these novels. A rain-bird is the poor animal, which has not a nest to take shelter from rain. It implies a man, who has had plenty of hardships in a citiy. He is converted to his country but cannot, because there is not his country no longer. This theme is spreaded in <A bird and a tree> and transformed in <The old pine tree> and <The abstract of life>.
The tree in the Lee Moon-goo's novels imply the premodern world view. In <My body has been standing or walking too long>, many trees turn up. They imply the faitful farmers, every “Tom, Dick and Harry”. They have grown up and become a thicket of the assorted trees in the place, where the king pine tree has been felled in <The miscellany about the village named Gwanchon>. The king-pinetree is correspondent with the premodern world view. It means morals of patricentric ethics.
The prunus padus is symbol of love in <The house where a tree prays>. In this novel Ja-ya drop in at Woo-ya's house to be fascinated by the tree with the white blossom, the prunus padus. Ja-ya is an insane person. Woo-ya accepts Ja-ya delightfully and loved. She got better thanks to his love.
The tree in the Korean-novel implies the circle of nature, a birthplace, a mother, a patricentric society and love.
