It was after Thoreau's nature writing was reinterpreted and revived that more profound insight and more powerful vision were found in his works than in those of Emerson and any other American writers. The revival of the green Thoreau is closely related to the rise of the environmental literary studies or ecocriticism. A significant parallel between American and Korean Thoreau studies can be observed. It can be found that the number of articles published in Korea on Thoreau has sharply risen since The Association of Studies in Literature and Environment (ASLE) and ASLE-Korea were established. It was not only in the quantity of the research that Thoreau studies in Korea have made a remarkable progress. Thoreau studies seemed to become more appealing and powerful with recent ecological approaches. In particular, Kang Yong-ki's "Thoreau's Nature Overlapped with Culture and Its Ecocritical Implication" and Shin Moonsu's "Ecological Thinking in Henry David Thoreau's Walden" trigger more sensitive and significant ecocritical debates, requiring a reconsideration of ecocritical questions posed by Thoreau's texts.
It can be a significant contribution of deconstructive reading to Walden studies to discover the discrepancy between Walden Pond itself and the Walden Pond described in the text with human language. Accepting the discrepancy without reservations, however, may lead to losing sight of the dynamic flow toward nature as well as the constant tension between human motivation and nature found in the text of Walden. It is important to note that the text of Walden does not merely demonstrate the discrepancy and overlapping area between nature and human perspectives, but instead makes strenuous attempts to reach real nature, even while conceding that this quest can be made only by man, through his language.
