This study attempts to elucidate the influences on Henry David Thoreau of the Hindu scriptures. Some biased scholars tend to ignore Thoreau’s adoption of the Indian scriptures as a main source of his Transcendentalism. But when we meditate on the role Hinduism played in organizing the validity of Thoreau’s entire life and the conceptions of Hinduism, we see that his Hindu Orientalism was by no means unintentional; nor was it an momentary catch phrase for the expression of his early reading of the Hindu scriptures. It is evident that Thoreau’s hermitage, alone in the woods on the shore of Walden Pond, is similar to that of an Indian Yogi who appears in the Indian writings. Rather, his living mode was a metonymy for the most essential goal of his metaphysical biography. Accepting the Hindu philosophies as reinforcements of his life, and as a resource to make a new country, a new enlightenment, Thoreau tested them by living them out in accordance with their practical issues. He assumed that a little of the India could be implanted moderately to the humus of the new world. In order to prove that Thoreau’s hermitage in Walden is identical with that of Hindu sages in aims and environment, this study will focus on examining how much Thoreau’s vision of such a quest was gained from Asian Indian writings.
