The title of part V of The Waste Land is “What the Thunder Said”, which is originated from the Hindu scripture, Brihadaranyaka Upanishad. Though part V begins with what can be thought to be the description of Christ’s death, it ends with the formal ending of Hindu scriptures, “Shantih.” The word “shantih” is repeated three times, which means Eliot or the speaker of the poem very strongly wanted the peace which passes understanding in Eliot’s words. The last line but one of the poem is “Datta. Dayadhvam. Damyata”, which means “give. sympathise. control.”
Though there are lots of images of Christianity, the images are not introduced from the viewpoint of Christianity, but from the viewpoint of fertility rituals and Hinduism, as we examined. For example, the ordeal and death on the cross of the Christ in the opening section of part V can be thought to be introduced from the viewpoint of fertility rituals. As Sri says, Eliot subjects the risen Christ to the Hindu-Buddhist ideas of reincarnation and the illusory nature [maya] of existence. The approach to the Chapel Perilous is based on Miss Weston’s book, From Ritual to Romance as Eliot says in his note to The Waste Land, not on the Christian quest of holy grail and spear.
We can conclude that The Waste Land, or at least the Part V of the poem is formed in the shape of Upanishads and intends to the ultimate blessing. Eliot proposes the way to the salvation of the modern waste land. This work or at least the part V is written in the viewpoint of Hinduism and the tolerance of Hinduism which Eliot learned at the graduate school.
