A new method for unform flow in the evaporator of a heat pump system and cycle characteristics of the heat pump system with liquid distributor were measured. This construction simulated air-conditioning and refrigeration systems, and HCFC-22 was used as working fluid. First, experimental tests have been performed in order to investigate the flow distribution characteristics in the distributor which has 4 pipe branches. Each branch was made of a small diameter tube of 5.35 ㎜ inside diameter. Four variable area flow meters were used to measure the flow rate at each branch. These were certified to uniform flow within a maximum of 5% which was the flow rate difference at each branch. Second, the relationship of compressor shaft power, cooling capacity and coefficient of performance to the evaporating temperature were reserched in both a liquid distribution system and a normal system. The results showed that the cooling capacities for the liquid distribution system were significantly higher (about 30%) than those of the normal system, and the pressure drops for the liquid distribution system were much lower (about 80~90%) than those of the normal system. Thus the COPs for the liquid distribution system were higher (about 10~20%) than those of the normal system. This will lead to improved performance and energy efficiency when systems are designed to utilize the liquid distributor.
