The objective of this study is to propose the storage and the practical use of the design knowledge for mechanical systems in building. Unlike conventional expert systems, the proposed method can store knowledge in the form of sentences familiar to mechanical system engineers. In this paper, the characteristics of design knowledge of mechanical systems in building are analyzed. The design knowledge of the building mechanical systems is classified into 4 types. The rule based knowledge representation method is developed taking into account the sentence structure. Finally, a rule based knowledge base is proposed.
