Interestingly enough, Mark Twain's long forgotten play Is He Dead? portraits a transvestite, Francois Millet, whose original model is a real historical French artist Jean Francois Millet. Through the devices of pseudo-death and transvestism, the character, representing three identities, reveals some problems. The protagonist represents three Millet(s) in one person: a male(his anatomical sex), a female (Tillou) as a disguised gender in a female apparel, but acting his own sex, and a female imitating like a female. In addition, there is one more Millet imagined by the audience. These characters do not be integrated into one comic character, as far as the real figure is remembered.
The main farcical effects of the play come from protagonist's pseudo-death and transvestism. But his pseudo-death does not resurrect him: he (Millet) dies for good and he is given another name, Placid Duval, his eternal imitator of himself. Thus he becomes an ironic protagonist rather than a comic one.
Transsexuality, however, blurring the solid binary gender system in this society, widens the woman's limit. As a transsexual, Millet/Tillou actually crosses the border line between sexes by doing two things which are not allowed to women. She outspeaks and verbally attacks her male antagonist. And she smokes pipe on stage. Such behaviors are possible because there is male Millet underneath the dress. S(he), however, accepted as a woman by the other characters on stage and the audience off stage, provides an opportunity to think about the restrictions imposed only to women.
I found Is He dead? difficult to call a comedy in Aristotle' perspective either. The protagonist is too painful for a comic protagonist as well as ironical. He is problematic like Shylock in The Merchant of Venice which leaves its ending problematic too. The drag protagonist, however, not imitating the stereotyped image of woman, possibly presents a new image of woman by demonstrating highly outspoken and bold behaviors.
