We deal with Kang-Kyung-Po as the national base of the distribution network of goods at the end of the Chosun Dynasty, with especial emphasis on its location. Several documents show that not only was Kang-Kyung-Po the important port of long-distance trade, but that it played a significant role in leading the economical change of the late Chosun Dynasty.
Kang-Kyung-Po was geographically located in a naturally advantageous place. The resident who recognized this advantage were also well aware of the winds of change calling for a new order in the late Chosun Dynasty. The prosperity of Kang-Kyung-Po resulted from the wisdom of the area's residents. In order to transform the frequently flooded district into the national base of the distribution networks of goods, they constructed a bridge and roads. And they also put lots of effort in setting up and maintaining the port.
At first, Kang-Kyung-Po's location was not an advantage, but a great disadvantage. However, the resident wisely overcame this drawback. What was Kang-Kyung-Po's natural location like? Above all, it was location on the bank of the big river, that is, the Keum River. This meant that Kang-Kyung-Po, which was adjacent to the river, had good condition to provide adequate water transportation. In order to become the center of commercial power, convenient transportation was essential.
Because of its location on the bank of Keum River, Kang-Kyung-Po was naturally prone to floods. Therefore, when a great flood occurred, not only the Kang-Kyung area.
but also the Yun-San, Suk-Sung, In-Chun, Ham-Yul areas became deluged. This caused the course of the tributaries to change frequently, and caused frequent flood damages in the surrounding areas. Despite this deficiency, Kang-Kyung-Po could survive as a port mainly because the surrounding areas around the port were raised on a hilly district.
As the agricultural society crumbled at the end of the Chosun Dynasty, many farmers had to leave their farms. These former farmer settled at the Kang-Kyung region, and started their new lives. And in efforts to overcome the geographical disadvantages of the region, the new residents strives to improve the transportation system that was essential to their lives. They tried to facilitate the exchange of goods by luring the markets that were prospering nationwide. However, since the resident, who were not satisfied with the regional trade, began to extend their ambitions to a wider range, the establishment of a port was necessary. Kang-Kyung-Po was set up under such circumstances.
Their efforts can hold significance in several ways. First, it helps give specific shape to the growth of the monetary economy in the late Chosun Dynasty. Second, it can make a significant contribution in the field of economic history that lacks case study. Third, if this major premise is to gain effect, it may help explain the nature of the commercial capital of the late Chosun Dynasty.
