The aim of this study is to research the constitutional development of the medieval towns in Germany, with particular emphasis on the medieval jurisdiction of three towns, Stendal, Brandenburg and Salzwedel in Mark Brandenburg.
Normally the impression is one of a unified community when medieval towns received its first Stadtrecht (common rights or privileges of town as a group), although there is some evidence that the new local administration, now to be chosen by the burgesses rather than by the king, involved two or more reeves.
We thus compare the proceedings of the jurisdictional autonomy of these three towns in Mark Brandenburg. We examine on the one hand when the three towns received the Stadtrecht and what kind of jurisdictional privilegies they accepted. On the other hand, we try to compare the function of the iudex which exercised the Hochgerichtsbarkeit ("High-Jurisdiction")in these towns.
For this purpose we used the Codex Diplomaticus Brandenburgensis as the primary documents which is relevant to the urban history of Mark Brandenburg.
