Much Study has been undertaken for cases of hysteria and neurosis and thanks to this trend, the famous hysteric 'Dora' has enjoyed great attention from psychoanalysts and feminists as well. Unlike her, Dr. Schreber did not draw much attention from psychoanalysts and scholars alike. However, Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis and Lacan, the successor of Freud delved into the case of Dr. Schreber and produced the valuable materials indispensable to the understanding of psychosis.
Freud's analysis of Dr. Schreber's psychotic phenomena centers on the father while Lacan's analysis centers on the name of the father. In his analysis Freud emphasizes how Dr. Schreber's homosexual love for his father determines his psychic phenomena along with his guilt caused by his unconscious desire for the father. On the other hand, in his analysis Lacan tries to overcome the limitations caused by Freud's too biological reading of Dr. Schreber's case by paying attention to Dr. Schreber's linguistic expression of his unconscious desires with the concept of foreclosure. In Lacan's view whatever formed in the unconscious level should find outlet into signifiers by way of accepting the symbolic of the society. However, when that process is denied, that is, when the subject does not accept the paternal metaphor, so called, the name of the father, what is repressed in the unconscious returns in the real in the form of hallucination.
