Both a historical novel and a historical drama are closely related to history itself in that the two artistic genres are based on historical facts. This indicates that these artistic forms shouldn’t seek their fictional narratives at the cost of the facts, which is equivalent to denying the genres themselves. Therefore a historical novel and a historical drama must have a historical reality and historical consciousness, or ‘a sense of history.’
Chang Po-go(장보고), a heroic character who lived an adventure life in the East Asia in the 9th century, appears often in a series of novels. Most of these fictions, however, show not only cliched historical events and prejudicial approaches but also lacking literary creativity and ‘a sense of history.’ This problem is significantly addressed in a recently published novel, Haesin(해신, a god of sea).
The author, Choi In-ho(최인호) conducted comprehensive research and visited Chang’s historic places to make a real characters-based plot with a dynamic and realistic touch. Yet his original intention to provide a new interpretation of Chang has ended up into deifying and resurrecting him politically. Other than that, Haesin stands out among all Chang motif novels with strength of its sense of history.
On the contrary, Haesin, a drama version failed to deliver a literary and historical message of the original fiction even though it enjoyed a high rating of the viewers. This drama’s success is mainly supported by a melodrama structure among three male and female characters of love triangle coupled with spectacle scenes and verisimilitude. Therefore, the drama was fun yet didn’t touch the viewers deep in their heart with a historical message. Drama Haesin can’t be considered an authentic historical drama with a sense of history.
