In spite of advances in work automation in industry, manual material handling (MMH) tasks continue to be an important feature of many industrial operations in Korea. Manual materials handling can be described as moving loads from place to place by lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, or carrying in a work environment. A major concern with MMH tasks has been the large number of work injuries, especially musculoskeletal disorders and low-back injuries due directly or indirectly to such tasks. In Korea, many regulations and safety guidelines for the work place are based on the OSHA and NIOSH programs, and not much attention has been paid to establishing load limits of various MMH tasks, especially lifting task, for Korean workers, even though the body size and strength capabilities are different from western population. Therefore in order to control MMH task hazard in Korea, a comprehensive database dealing with Korean people should be established.
The objective of this study was to utilize the psychophysical and physiological approach to examine the lifting tasks from simulated industrial tasks for Korean. Using the psychophysical methodology, subjects were asked to determine the amount of weight they could lift for an actual one-hour work period. The one-hour period was selected rather than an eight-hour work shift because it more closely approximates an intermittent work schedule that would be encountered at the industry. Three different lifting frequencies (1, 3, 5 lifts/min) with one lifting range from Knuckle to Shoulder were studied. The MAWL was determined under the different frequencies of tasks, and the oxygen consumption, heart rate, and RPE values were measured or recorded while subjects were lifting their MAWLs.
