This study was designed to find ①what phonological rules had existed by looking into the historical changes of ‘u/o+?/a’ and ②what the spread course of each rule had been by comparing its application percentages by province groups. As a result, the following conclusions were reached.
1. Five important phonological rules ― w-gliding rule, w-addition rule, wdeletion rule, w?＞o rule, ‘o＞u/u+―’ rule ― had applied to the historical changes of ‘u/o+?/a’. Then, the last four had principally applied to Yeongnam Dialect.
2. The average application percentages of w-gliding rule is 86.5% which is the highest among them of five rules. It was thought that the birthplace of w-gliding rule was six(South Kyeonggi Province, South Kangwon Province, East Chungnam Province, East Jeonbuk Province, Southeast Gyeongbuk Province, South-Coast of Gyeongnam Province) and this rule had spread from each birthplace into neighboring areas.
3. It was thought that the birthplace of w-addition rule was non-Yeongnam Province. But the application percentages of this rule was highest in Yeongnam Dialect. It was because the spreading of w-gliding rule to Yeongnam Dialect was later than that to the other Dialects.
4. It was thought that the birthplace of w-deletion rule was three(South-Coast of Gyeongnam Province, South Gyeongbuk Province, North Gyeongbuk Province) and this rule had spread from each birthplace into neighboring areas.
5. It was thought that the birthplace of w?＞o rule was three(East Kyeongnam Province, Northwest Gyeongbuk Province, East Gyeongbuk Province) and this rule had spread from each birthplace into neighboring areas.
6. It was thought that the birthplace of ‘o＞u/u+―’ rule was East Kyeongnam Province and this rule had spread from its birthplace into neighboring areas.
