This study was designed to find ①what phonological rules had existed by looking into the historical changes of adverbial ending ‘-aX’ and ②what the spread course of each rule had been by comparing its application percentages by province groups. As a result, the following conclusions were reached.
1. Two phonological rules ― the vowel harmony rule〈수식 삽입〉 and the sonorant assimilation rule〈수식 삽입〉 ― had applied to the historical changes of adverbial ending ‘-aX’.
2. The application range of the vowel harmony rule had expanded ①from verb stems with open final syllables to verb stems with closed final syllables and ②from monosyllabic verb stems to polysyllabic verb stems. But that of the sonorant assimilation rule had expanded from verb stems with closed final syllables to verb stems with open final syllables.
3. The vowel harmony type of contemporary Korean can be called “double diagonal VH” because the two lines dividing the harmonic vowel classes run diagonally in the vowel chart, e.g.,

4. The vowel harmony type of Yeongnam Dialect can be called either “double diagonal VH” which is characterized by the dichotomy of harmonic vowel classes into [+retracted tongue root] and [-retracted tongue root] or “horizontal VH” which is characterized by the dichotomy of harmonic vowel classes into [+high] and [-high].

5. It was thought that both the birthplace of the vowel harmony rule and that of the sonorant assimilation rule were Chungnam Province and these two rules had spread from their birthplaces into neighboring areas.
6. The vowel harmony index of contemporary Korean is as follows: Chungnam Province(76)＜Chungbuk Province(78)＜Kyeonggi Province(83), Kangwon Province(83)＜Kyeongbuk Province(85), Jeonnam Province(85) ＜Jeju Province(86)＜Jeonbuk Province(89)＜kyeongnam Province(92).
