This Thesis is the iconographic study on Tiziano Vecellio’s 〈The Penitent Magdalen〉. Mary Magdalen is a female character in the Bible who accompanied with Jesus during His worldly life. She was paid attention as the first witness to the Resurrection of Christ before the Middle Ages. Considered as a reformed prostitute through The Golden Legend, she became very popular and played an important role in music, play and literature beyond the category of arts when it reached to Renaissance and Baroque. As a reformed prostitute, Mary Magdalen in a desert was dealt as a type of Penitence by many artists.
Amid them, Tiziano’s Mary Magdalen is very controversial among many art historians for the saint’s sensual beauty. Tiziano’s Magdalen is in a contrast to the tradition of representing the saint. For a long time before Tiziano, she was expressed as an old thin woman to show her hardships or as a chaste lady.
The meaning of Tiziano’s Magdalen has been changed through the efforts to understand his work in a context that his work reflects the background of the times. This article tries to get the real meaning of 〈The Penitent Magdalen〉 through iconographic study and the understanding of the times.
Starting from those points above, the chapter Ⅱ of this article provides the contemporary background of his Magdalen. And the chapter Ⅲ introduces the literal tradition and the iconographic developments for Mary Magdalen before Tiziano. Finally, the last chapter is an analysis on Tiziano’s three 〈The Penitent Magdalen〉s. The works were comparitively analyzed in detail with works of the artists who had been influenced by the iconographic tradition. The new type of Penitent Magdalen created by Tiziano was generally analyzed through composition and posture of the saint.
This study points out that 〈The Penitent Magdalen〉 of Tiziano dissolved the traditional iconography on Magdalen and newly interpreted her in connection with the Counter-Reformation and the contemporary ideas. From this, we clarified that his work is a religious devotional image even though it seems to have the conflicting images of a prostitute and a saint. To conclude, Tiziano’s Mary Magdalen suggested a new image amid various Magdalen images by artists of that times by combining thorough understanding on the theme of his works with his artistic creativity.
