Asian American Women Artists began to emerge on the American art scene in the late 1980s. They realized that stereotypical images of Asian women had widely spread in American society beginning in the late nineteenth century. As the Asian American women tried to introduce new subjectivities as artists, they faced numerous problematic rejections. Their energetic attempts became increasingly urgent to change the commonly accepted passive identity of Asian American women because of their double subjugation to the patriarchal conventions of American art world and the recognized norms within the Asian American communities.
Most recognized studies of Asian women stereotypes analyze their represented imagery in popular magazines, movies, operas, novels, and even in children's animations. This article examines these same misinterpretations in the visual art practices that have historically been neglected. The aim of this article is twofold. One is to analyze how certain stereotypical images of Asian women have been constructed, circulated and reproduced in particular historical, sociopolitical, and cultural contexts between US and Asian countries, so that we can expose the implications of such images. Another is to closely examine ways in which Asian American women artists tried to deconstruct the stereotypes through counter-representations, and to discuss the problems involved in self-representation.
Multicultural and postcolonial theories that debate on stereotypes are applied to this study. The concepts of ambivalence on stereotypes and subversive nature of the hybrid space in Bhabha’s theory, in particular, was helpful in deconstructing false identities of stereotypes. This study attempts to bring to light the significances and complexities of counter-representation as well as the historically manipulative images of stereotypes of Asian women.
