This paper aims at unravelling the subversive aspects of gender and sexuality in Oscar Wilde's drama, Salome. Salome is, first of all, a modern drama which deals with ‘new woman' of fin de siecle like Ibsen's Nora and Hedda Gabler. Salome tries to satisfy her own sexual desire and never stops realizing her own narcissistic desire for Jokanaan, the prophet. This aggressive pursuit of her own purpose makes her like a masculine woman and this description of a woman denies the conceptions of an ideal woman as “an angel in the house”. The latter part of 19th century was a period which saw the development of women's rights and the feminism of this period began to acknowledge the sexual desire in women and Salome reflects this feministic spirit of the age.
Secondly, this drama subverts the traditional conceptions of sexuality as well. Victorian people thought that only the sex between husband and wife was normal and desirable and except this kind of sex other types of sex were not natural or desirable. However Wilde puts the homosexual desire between men alongside with the heterosexual desire and suggests that there no hierarchy between the two: homosexuality can be natural, desirable and normal like heterosexuality. To suggest this kind of radical view in sexuality Wilde uses the minor characters like the Page of Herodias, exploits the language of man-poet when he describes the language of Salome while she courts Jokanaan, and inserts the illustrations of Aubrey Beardley in his 1894 English edition of this drama.
This phenomenon of subversive conceptions in gender and sexuality is the outcome of Decadence which came from French thought in literature and art. As a representative decadent of English literature in the latter part of nineteenth century Wilde tried to embody the decadent theory in his work, and now for that matter Salome is Wilde himself who tried to live according to his narcissistic desire never minding the social conventions only because he believed that love can save human beings from spiritual corruption. Salome is a symbolic drama which sings unconsciously Wilde's own fantasy about unrestrained love for another man.
