1. Proposal of the Subject
The Pre-Raphaelites consisting of seven members including Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais tried to revive truthfulness and simplicity of the paintings from Middle ages and early Renassiance art while criticizing solidified conventional paintings in Academy since Raphael. The Pre-Raphaelites can be defined as an art movement where a Medievalism, a reaction to demolition of former value due to materialism was presented in the background of England in 1850's. Pre-Raphaelitism Brotherhood trying to find purity of paintings through revival of religious paintings took German Nazarener, Hl. Lukas-Bruderschaft as their specimen. Nevertheless The Pre-Raphaelites intended to retreat corrupted morals in Victorian ages, while Nazarener focused on the faith of religion. It was John Ruskin who had great influence on the idea of The Pre-Raphaelites. As an art critic as well as a social reformer, he insisted that faithfulness to the nature in early Christian art be revived since he regarded 'Truth to the Nature' as a standard to judge beauty as well as righteousness. Under the influence of Ruskin, combining symbols of religion and facts of reality was the main task in early religious paintings of The Pre-Raphaelites. Commercial success from expansion of imperialism in Great Britain and the publishment of The Origin of Species written by Charles Darwin were crucial facts to undermine values and faith of Christianity in England. Therefore, late religious paintings of Pre-Raphaelite were converted to care about beauty under the idea, "Art for Art's sake" rather than social reform. Religious paintings of The Pre-Raphaelites are valuable examples to show how modem secularization were developed.
2. Religious Paintings of Symbolic Realism
Religious paintings of The Pre-Raphaelites focusing on contemporary values based on the theory of Ruskin followed realism which combined symbolic meaning of religion with real life. Hunt was the representative artist who presented the trend. With criticism against conventional and solidified religious paintings 'Truth to the Nature' and revival of religious values asserted by Ruskin were the main theme of the religious paintings of The Pre-Raphaelites. Hunt who followed religious symbols and realism of Ruskin explained that the Typological Symbolism was the combination of realism and iconography, form and contents, matter and spirit. Hunt's Symbolic Realism combining religious ideology with Ruskin's realism through Typological Symbolism was one of the main concepts of the religious paintings of The Pre-Raphaelites. It was also Hunt's fundamental contribution to change Ruskin's term, Truth to Nature' into his own term, Truth to Religious Painting:
3. Religious Paintings of Mundane Estheticism
Religious paintings of The Pre-Raphaelite focused on the studies of Bible and evangelical representation in 1850's emphasized mundane aspects by Rossetti and Burne-Jones, For Rossetti, God was regarded as being with wisdom and flexibility who cared for individual experiences and their emotion not demanding religious faith. Namely, Rossetti asserted that passion for sense, the instinct for beauty given by God was the nucleus of the religious paintings. He regarded eager for beauty as the ability to set one's soul from rigid religious theory. Through these flexible faith and his esthetical aspect, he embodied secular paintings with religious image. His sensual attitude for religious paintings was represented thorough Magdala Maria rather than Holy Maria. Rossetti's religious paintings becoming mundane as a ritual for art and beauty accorded with the Aesthetic Movement of late religious paintings of The Pre-Raphaelites.
