In cultural area of East Asia, bamboo painting(竹畵) is one of the painting genres that has received particular love from old times because of its growing and external characteristics and symbolisms. Bamboo paintings have been drawn from Wei and Jin Dynasties(魏晉), but lots of paintings were drawn with development of flower and bird paintings in the Tang Dynasty(唐). As the model of ink bamboo paintings with ink bamboo painting theory in Northern Song Dynasty(北宋), ink bamboo painting became an independent field of painting(畵門). Bamboo painting gradually became an important painting genre of painting title(畵題) with figure, landscape, flower and bird, etc. based on ink bamboo painting in painting history of East Asia.
This paper grasped the process of creation and development of Chinese bamboo painting and examined the development of bamboo and its classification system by period. This paper also collected examples of literature records and existing bamboo paintings and analyzed the characteristics of bamboo painting classification. Techniques of bamboo painting, painting titles by ecology and climate, painting titles mixed by animals and plants, painting titles based on subject consciousness, etc. were collected and types and classification system of bamboo were reorganized. In research methodology that collects painting titles of East Asia, this thesis should be one example for systematic establishment of the classification of each subject of painting in East Asian paintings with the object of bamboo paintings.
