The Joseon white porcelain is divided into soft white porcelain and hard white porcelain by the quality of the substantially different material. The majority of the porcelain are hard white porcelain throughout period and region, while soft white porcelain was produced in a specific region. This study used scientific methods to clarify the manufacture technique and characteristics of material of soft white porcelain. The objects of this study are the hard white porcelain excavated from Kiln Sites No. 9 in Gwangju Beoncheon-ri and the soft white porcelain recovered at Gyeongsangnam-do and Jollanam-do.
The soft white porcelain can be easily told from the hard white porcelain by the manufacture technique related to body composition and absorption in physical properties. The hard white porcelain is feldspar-clay-quartz type and the soft white porcelain is clay-quartz type or clay-feldspar type. The body composition of the soft white porcelain has higher refractoriness than the hard white porcelain, and hence, the range of vitrification temperature is different.
The firing temperature of the soft white porcelain is similar to the hard white porcelain in spite of the fact that physical properties related to body composition between the two is different. The body composition of the soft white porcelain is a major factor in porous and coarse body structure, high absorption, and crack of the layer of glaze. Though the iron oxide content of the soft white porcelain is similar to that of the hard white porcelain, color is different causing by unstable oxidation firing atmosphere.
The soft white porcelain made in Gyeongsangnam-do and Jollanam-do shows regional differences reflecting the characteristic of raw material locating Mount Jiri and the Nakdong river. Therefore it is certain that the soft white porcelain can be classified by the kiln sites in detail. These soft white porcelain can be insulate the heat and keep warm, but strength is low with high absorption origin. These characteristics of the soft white porcelain is closely connected with manufacture background and use of that.
