Sex problems in literary works have often caused many heated controversies as to their obscenity. In this study, we will investigate how writers have treated sex problems with what kind of intention in several Korean novels.
Korean modern novels here referred range from Lee Gwang-soo's Moo-jeung of 1917 to novels around 1935.
As a method of the investigation, we will first grasp the conception of sex claimed by modern writers, establish a criterion of obscenity in art and then analyze and observe sex problems reflected in moderm literary works.
Sigmund Freud. an Austrian psychoanalyst regarded sexual desire not only as a desire for the union of sexual organs but as a desire for all the pleasures resulting from the union. He expressed the desire as "libid," a Iation word which means desire.
J. P. Sartre, a French existential philospher and writer. observes that in sexal action esthetic consciousness should precede sexual desire and it should be something esthetic and conscious.
H. Bergson says, "A story about sex without dea is obscenity."
In the light of above mentioned conceptions, modern Korean novels are as follows;
Lee Gwang-soo, in his novel "Sarang," said that sex erotic is indecent and sex logic is noble. He does not present any new interpretation of sex, but treats sex as a means, to preach his Buddhist philosophy-rising above the trivialities of life.
Kim Dong-in, in his "Gam-ja" and "Kim Yeon-sil Jeon," treats sex as a means to expose and denounce social distortion and contradictory humanity. Writers who treated sex similarly are Hyun Jin-gun, Ra Do-hyang and Kim Yoo-jung.
Lee Hyo-suck thought of sex the same in nature as animal sex and beautified and purified if In the ther hand, writers such as Chung Bi-suck and Kim Young-soo did not have any new interpretation of sex, but expressed the elements which stimulated sexual impulse and they are in danger of falling into obscenity.
In conclusion, sex in modern novels is firstly a dangerous thing which stimulates readers' sexual feeling and secondly is used as a means to expose and denounce social distortion and contradictory humanity instead of present writers' own views of sex itself.
Thirdly human sex is placed at the samel evel with the natural instinct of animals and purified.
Therefore Lee Hyo-suck is the only writer who has his own new inlerprelation of sex.
