With the increase in globalization and technological advances, intercultural competence is becoming a necessity as more and more diverse groups of people live and work alongside the urban communities in the United States and around the world. Similarly, many urban churches have experienced demographic shifts over the years with significant increases in ethnic and minority groups. These congregations are keen to attract, train, and develop interculturally competent leaders who can minister to their increasingly diverse communities. This research explores which factor(s), if any, contribute most toward intercultural competence of Christian leaders.
A descriptive quantitative approach was used for this research using the Intercultural Competence Scale (ICS) and the Background Information Questionnaire (BIQ). The ICS was used to gauge the intercultural competence of respondents. The BIQ, a survey instrument with category and open-ended questions, was used to gather demographic information of the participants. The sample consisted of 300 full-time staff, part-time staff, and volunteer leaders from moderate to large size churches with ethnically mixed congregations. A total of 238 (79%) usable instruments were returned for data analysis.
The results of the statistical analysis showed that ethnicity, age, marital status, level of education, and frequency of ministry contacts were key factors in intercultural competence among Christian leaders.
