It is estimated that the present population of foreign Chinese in Jeonbuk(全北) is 697 persons. The Chinese in Jeonbuk are originally from Shandong(山東) Province in China. Most of them speak Muping(牟平) dialect. This study focuses on the language usage and phonological difference among the generations of Muping (牟平) foreign Chinese.
The second generation, who is 77 years old, has kept the phonological system of Muping dialect very well because she lived in Muping from twelve to nineteen. However, the third generation, who is 45 years old, maintains both his mother's phonological features and Taiwan Guoyu(國語) because he studied Mandarin in Chinese school for 12 years.
The second generation uses the initials of Muping dialects such as [p, ph, m, f, t,, th, n, l, k, kh, x, c, ch, ?, c, t?, t?h, ?, ts, tsh, s, Ø] fully, otherwise, the third generation commends the retroflexes such as [t?, t?h, ?, r] as well. The 38 finals of [?, i, u, y, a, ia, ua, o, uo, yo, e, ie, ye, ai, uai, ei, iei, uei, ao, iao, ou, iou, an, ian, uan, yan, en, ien, uen, yn, a?, ia?, ua?, e?, i?, o?, yo?, ?r] are spoken by the second generation, but two finals of [iei, yo] are missed in the third generation's readings. Four tonal values [51], [53], [213] and [131] are identified in the second generation's readings. Because of the influence of Taiwan Guoyu(國語) and mother's tongue, the third generation also has [55], [35] and [21] tonal values.
The fourth generation, who is eight years old, attends Chinese school in Iksan(益山). He uses Muping dialect when he talks with his grandmother and father, but he uses Mandarin when he talks with his mother.
