The tattoo is a sort of fashion and a subject of study in folklore. But it has not been noticed in the Korean Folklore. Many tribes of SAMHAN(三韓) have had tattoo customs, but Tattoo customs had been cut off in the course of forming and developing of the era of the Three Kingdoms. The tattoo customs of SAMHAN having fragmentary materials can be restored through the tattoo materials of East-Asian area. The East-Asian tattoo including SAMHAN was generated with the function of protecting sorcery firstly, the function of clan mark and social position mark lately and moreover the function of beauty. What the tattoo customs of SAMHAN has revived is the penalty tattoo as the legislative system Because of this penalty tattoo and also a criminal syndicate appeared in Japanese Imperialism, the negative image is dominating the masses but the tattoo remains and spread out as the criminal syndicate tattoo and the beauty tattoo.
