〈Simcheong〉 shows the three places, including Dohwadong, The Sea King’s palace, and the Imperial Palace. As the character in the novel moves among the places, an event occurs. Among the three places, Dohwadong and the Imperial Palace can be called a realistic place, while the Sea King’s Palace is a surrealistic place. Given the performance of the character and the circumstances in the novel, however, these two places can be viewed as open space, not being different from each other. If the novel is analyzed based on the characters, it is difficult to overcome the limitations of the existing research that deals with the methods of the initiation regarding every event. However, if the characters and the objects are viewed from equal perspectives, it is plausible to explain that the surrealistic space is the extension of the realistic space. This perspective can be thought of as a relative way of looking at the spaces. From this perspective, the researcher attempts to examine the places of 〈Simcheong〉. The ultimate purpose of this research is to study the relationship between the characters and the spaces, and the relationships among the spaces in order to discover a framework of creation for a novel of classical literature. Therefore, the researcher discussed the following points in each chapter.
First is an aspect of spaces. 〈Simcheong〉 shows the three spaces. Dohwadong represents space of poverty and pain for Simcheong, a filial daughter, and her family. The Sea King’s Palace, which is submarine space that connects the heavenly world, is a space of abundance. The Imperial Palace, where the emperor lives, is a space of abundance as well as deficiency. Through the Sea King’s Palace, the two spaces, Dohwadong and the Imperial Palace, are places where each deficiency can be satisfied. Simcheong moves from each space without dying, while interacting with the heavenly world though the Sea King’s Palace.
Second is a technique of space creation that appears in the relationship between Simcheong, and the realistic space and the surrealistic space. That Simcheong moves from space to space without dying indicates that the space is open. The reason for the open space is that Simcheong simultaneously moves from space to space freely. In this open space, Simcheong displays her will through an ideology of filial piety. 〈Simcheong〉 shows the main aspect of the character as well as of the space. These two depend on each other, and fill the deficiency of the other party with something that each one possesses, through the medium of the open space.
