The academic circles of North Korea have actively studied Old Joseon recently. As a result of these studies, the newly-discovered facts have been added to the existing research. One of these is that the site of the stone-pile is related with the ritual of Old Joseon.
The examined sites up to now are Pyeongryukri and Munamri in Gilju, Dongsangri in Pihyeon, Wadong in Sinyang, Dangmoru in Pyeongyang, Songsindong in Yeontan and Dumundong in Cheolwon.
Some characteristics of the site of the stone-pile are as follows:
First, the geographical position is important in the site of the stone-pile. Most sites are situated on the foot of the mountain and the area of hill where we can command a fine view.
Second, the boundaries of the sites are partitioned off with large stones and then the sites of the stone-pile are filled with stones.
Third, owing to a few materials among which we can compare, the origin of the site of the stone-pile is not evident up to now. However, the altar of Dongshanzui site in Hongshan culture can be compared with the altar which lies on the No. 2 and under the third spot of Niuheliang site.
Fourth, considering the fact that dolmen and menhir coexist in the same site of the stone-pile, the sites of the stone-pile can be considered as the center of the megalithic culture complex.
