Wild radish, Raphanus sativus var. hortensis f. raphanistroides (Brassicaceae) is an insect-pollinated plant that grows mainly on beaches in East Asia. Enzyme electrophoresis was used to estimate genetic diversity and genetic structure of ten Korean populations of this plant. Although the Korean populations were small, isolated, and patchily distributed, they maintained a high level of genetic diversity: the average percentage of polymorphic loci was 67.9%, the mean number of alleles per locus was 2.27, and the average heterozygosity was 0.286. Total genetic diversity values varied from 0.067 to 0.743, giving an average 0.477 over all polymorphic loci. The absolute measure of genetic differentiation among populations was very low, 0.063. The proportion of total genetic variation due to differences among populations was 0.170, indicating that about 17% of the total allozyme variation was among populations. These estimates are considerably higher than those from species with similar life history and ecological characteristics, but they are lower than those from R. raphanistrum, the wild radish that grows in Europe and USA. Analysis of fixation indices showed a substantial deficiency of heterozygotes relative to Hardy-Weinberg expectations suggesting inbreeding in Korean wild radish.
