This essay aims at probing into main characters' values on sexual orientation, race, and sex. The existing criticism on Streamers concentrated some themes such as gender and sexuality(Vorlicky), race, class, and sexuality(Kinney), race and sexual identity(McDonough), and the absurd elements(Fenn and Bigsby) in it. However, the major themes penetrating the play are sexual orientation, race, and sex.
As for sexual orientation, Billy and Roger reveal their homophobia. Richie and Carlyle pursue homosexuality and bisexuality respectively and are immersed in their own sexual orientations self-righteously. On the other hand, Cokes shows his generous attitude toward homosexuality only after he suffers from leukemia. As for race, Billy shows his deep hatred on the Afro-Americans. Roger tries not to reveal his Africanness and, like Richie and Carlyle, doesn't care about the difference of the colors. As for sex, Rooney shows his sexist inclination by calling the recruits in the cadre room ‘pussies.’ Also, Roger shows it as he asks assuredly if Billy is not ‘a bitch.’
By the way, Rabe expresses his opinion that “all of his characters in Streamers are likable to a certain extent, but they carry some things to excess.” It means that Rabe shows sympathy for them, but, at the same time, keeps critical distance from all of them. Billy shows undesirable values on sexual orientation and race; Roger on sexual orientation, race, and sex; Richie and Carlyle on sexual orientation; Rooney on sex; Cokes on sexual orientation. So it can be inferred that Rabe's position is to respect the difference and diversity of sexual orientation, race, and sex and criticize any attempts to oppress or turn away from them, or abuse them to accomplish reverse discrimination. Therefore, Streamers is Rabe's outcome of a shock therapy which induces readers/audiences to consider the causes of the bloodshed in the cadre room in Virginia and, at the same time, critically reexamine six main characters' values on sexual orientation, race, and sex.
