This study examines the debate between deep ecology and social ecology in a critical perspective. They are both direct offshoots of the counter-cultural movement of the 1960s. They constitute modern radical ecological philosophy together with ecofeminism. As the inheritors of counter-cultural movement's utopian vision, they have much in common. They all demand fundamental changes in social systems, structures, attitudes and values, and paradigms.
Nevertheless, they reveal different perspectives about the causes of the ecological crisis and the key to its solution. Deep ecology explains the crisis as the outcome of the anthropocentric thought and calls for a shift from it toward an ecocentric thought guided by the norm of self-realization for all organisms including human beings, in order to overcome the crisis. Social ecology explains it as the result of authoritarian and hierarchical social structures, embodied most perniciously in capitalism and calls for anarchistic societies without any kinds of social hierarchy.
Deep ecologists regard social ecology as a type of anthropocentrism disguising "green". Social ecologists charge that deep ecology adheres reactionary, antihumanistic, and irrational assumptions and has some dangers to become an ideology forming and supporting ecofascism. The heated dispute between them has contributed to widening the philosophical gap between them and made it more difficult to form a united front of the green movement.
