Recently, the interest in regional lifestyle and culture has been expanded in Japan, and, therefore, people tend to focus more on the quality of mental life, such as comfort and pleasure, than on living in great affluence. Likewise, the purpose of area development has shifted from the economic turnaround to the formation of cultural capital through the development of natural resources. The concept of ecomuseum emerged under such a social environment in 1990s. The study aims to explore the direction of ecomuseum development in Japan and its implication, with a focus on the purpose of its foundation and operation.
This study provides several major findings. First, compared regular museums, ecomuseums play a role of area development. Second, ecomuseums are important mediums for environmental education, and, thus, such education provides theoretical backgrounds for the ecomuseum business. In light of that, another purpose of ecomuseums is to protect endangered natural treasuries. Third, ecomuseums are stimuli for area development. In other words, ecomuseums are closely related to the development of rural areas. Lastly, ecomuseums can be used for lifelong study. A thorough and comprehensive study on the region should be conducted by residents prior to the foundation of an ecomuseum.
