This paper investigated the characteristics of equatorial baroclinic mode using the data from the ocean assimilation system. The baroclinic contribution to surface zonal current and sea level anomalies are analyzed. The first three modes have mainly contributed to spatial distribution in equatorial wave guide. The first mode exhibits the largest variability in the western Pacific, while the second and third modes have peaks in the eastern part of the Pacific. The reason for these modal distribution is because the thermocline slope has a strong zonal gradient in equatorial Pacific. The wind stress forcings are projected onto the each baroclinic mode differently with the change of stratification in the upper ocean. The increased (decreased) stratification leads to more excitation of the higher (gravest) baroclinic modes. The decomposition analysis with the idealized profiles of buoyancy frequency supported this stability-mode relationship. A possible mechanism associated with baroclinic mode for ENSO decadal change is also discussed.
