The improving efficacies of Hericium Gold<SUP>®</SUP> containing fermented extract of Hericium erinaceum on acute hepatic dysfunction and alcoholic hangover were investigated via the effects on carbon tetrachloride (CCI₄)-induced hepatitis and ethanol overdosage, respectively. Oral administration with Hericium Gold<SUP>®</SUP>, especially at 100 ㎎/㎏, attenuated the delayed excretion and blood clearance of bromosulphalein induced by CCI₄ (1 ㎎/㎏). Hericium Gold<SUP>®</SUP> also reduced the increase in blood alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) activities following CCI₄ exposure. Although Hericium Gold<SUP>®</SUP> did not reduce the peak blood concentration of ethanol which was observed 1 hr after oral administration of alcohol (3 ㎖/㎏), it enhanced the blood clearance at 100 ㎎/㎏. Taken together, the results suggest that Hericium Gold<SUP>®</SUP> possesses hepatoprotective activity against exposure to CCI₄ or alcohol, and that could be a candidate for the improvement of chemical-induced or alcoholic liver disorders.
