Christian existentialism is the leading existential philosophy which made an influence upon the basic idea of modern American drama. Nicoli Berdyaev, a Christian existentialist, is a major philosopher among the Christian existential philosophers whose thoughts made an influence on the literary thought of American drama. According to his thought, truth is made in subjectivity and man resembling God has a subjective soul and the soul also resembles God.
Puritanism is a basic thought of American literature and it had an influence on Albee’s dramatic world. Puritanism is based upon presbyterianism and the presbyterianism puts its emphasis on subjectivity and individualism. In this point we can say that it has a relation to Christian existentialism and that the Christian existentialism had an influence upon Albee’s dramatic world.
In The Zoo Story, Albee’s early play, Jerry is trying to make Peter recognize his authentic self. Peter is isolated in his dogmatic world. He cannot find his true self on an existential basis. His alienation is not only from society but also from God. Finally through his own sacrifice Jerry achieves his utmost aim ― a human contact with Peter, opening his isolated mental world. As a result the non-existential barrier covering Peter’s mental world is broken by Jerry. At last Jerry leads Peter to his authentic self.
Edward Albee protests against the illusion and the dogmatic thought being degenerated from true and authentic belief and idea for God. He tries to make Americans truly recognize themselves through the blame for contemporary American society. In other words, Albee in his plays tries to make the Americans awake from their mistaken idea and identity and also he tries to find their authentic existence on the basis of Christian existentialism.
