This study deals with historicizing methods for showing woman suppression in Vinegar Tom by Caryl Churchill. Historicizing, a technique of Brechtian alienation effects, is an apparatus that stimulates the audience’s judgement capacity when they see a play about historical subjects. This is not telling history which happened chronologically but reviewing history by showing historic events in a play. This play makes audience criticize the history which has been considered as a cannon in comparison with today situation. Carly Churchill, a socialist feminist, thinks that the origin of woman suppression is based on capitalism, patriarchal social system, the conflicts among classes. Therefore she aims to explain the social, material reason that woman has placed a lower position in history. She thinks that traditional form of theatrical realism can’t contribute to her purpose. Because theater, she guesses, should eventually be a model for change. So she adapts Brechtian epic play in order to make the audience aware of the meaning of historical play and change historical interpretation. In addition, the audience recognize the past in the play is related with the current situation and they come to have a political view about it. Churchill shows such an intention in Vinegar Tom. She uses various apparatuses of epic theater such as song, episodic organization, social gestus and transvestism. This study examines these theatric apparatuses and emphasizes on their meaning and effect.
