Murdoch constantly considered ethical issues and suggested a vision of unification as a way to save the dry human society. Murdoch’s vision of unification is based on the recognition of true reality of individuals. Murdoch criticized the Western binary system because the system has a dangerous tendency for people to judge others according to their own self-centered code. Her vision begins with loving attention, a just and loving gaze directed upon individual reality. According to her we should admit the contingency of others through loving attention for people and the world. It makes us see true reality without distortion or fantasy. In her novel Under the Net selfish and illusioned characters come to recognize their own fantasy and attain to the vision of unification. Under the Net is narrated by a first person narrator Jake who is a Bohemian and selfish outsider. At the beginning, he just wanders about without any goal and any real relationship with others. However, through his friendship with Hugo he comes to recognize reality of the world and others. The key to Murdoch’s fiction lies in hero’s recognizing his fantasy and coming to find the reality of others. Her novels are dramatization of the lives of the people who are confused or deluded by fantasy but who seek enlightenment freedom and understanding of reality by attaining to the vision of unification.
