Homi Bhabha argues that the colonizer has anxiety and panic, while the colonized subverts colonialist power by forming a new hybridity identity. Bhabha posits hybridity as such a form of in-between space (third space), where the power of hegemonic colonial subject is disrupted. Borrowing Bhabha’s theory, this paper will examine how hybridity (represented in Antoinette) and anxiety of the colonizer in Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea serve to subvert the authority and power of the colonizing subject. Antoinette’s nameless husband enforces imperial and patriarchal Englishness, but his imperial desire includes anxiety and panic. His narrative reveals that his English identity is not as certain and secure as he desires. Antoinette is in “inbetweenness” as a “white nigger”: her status as a Creole becomes the model for the destabilization of a set of binary constructs, white/black, insider/outsider. She sees herself as a hybrid belonging nowhere fully, even in her husband’s eyes.
