Montagovian semantics specifying construction-specific semantic rules is costly, in that it has more semantic rules than is needed to account for the derivation of semantic representations. To remedy this, this paper attempts to provide a framework which makes semantic derivations economical. Semantic types are assigned to the corresponding syntactic categories. Each of the syntactic categories with semantic types tells how the categories in question are combined in the course of semantic derivation. That is, by directly using each of the semantic types assigned to the corresponding syntactic categories, some information of how each syntactic constituent is combined compositionally. This kind of direct use of semantic type can reduce the unnecessary semantic rules. In addition, tense is not treated syncategorematically in our system, which contrasts with Montagovian semantics. By doing so, we can take account of how syntactic elements are built up in a more principled way. Besides, it also may assist in understanding how to derive semantic representation of natural language cross-linguistically without positing construction-specific semantic rules.
