his paper is to examine existing literature textbooks and suggest an in-depth approach to study poetic images from a viewpoint of the ‘literary culture, focusing ‘literature and culture’ area of the subject of literature introduced in the 7th education curriculum for Korean.
An attempt to review the subject of literature from a ‘literary culture’ perspective under the 7th education curriculum consisting of learner-centered activities is based on the intention to understand the literature from a cultural viewpoint and extend the resulting findings to the adjacent artistic areas. Such a point of view is an approach to help understand the literature according to a more comprehensive cultural standard, but the existing literature textbooks focus simply on identifying similarities with adjacent arts.
Although the viewpoint of existing textbooks that explains poetic images focusing on the vivid visual property of calling our attention brought by the language of poetry and relates visual property of calling our attention directly with pictures may function as a way to identify the correlation between poetry and paintings, it is hard to be regarded as a substantially cultural viewpoint to reflect the contents, values, or aesthetic consciousness of the historically and socially formed interpretation of the world. In order to study profoundly the poetic images from a ‘literary culture’ perspective, it is essential to understand the cultural viewpoint to see and express the objects. As an essay on above issues, this paper analyzes meanings of the world-view and aesthetic consciousness contained in the poetic images on the basis of the review of 2 poems of Jung Ji-yong. This is a critical essay on the existing textbooks‘ simple approach to contrast the poetic images with paintings to identify a necessary position to take at the time of analyzing the poetic images from a ‘literary culture’perspective. Without in-depth understanding on the literary works, the perspective of ‘literary culture’ remains not only a superficial observation of the literature and cultural phenomena, but also reduces the value of literature.
