The goal of this paper is to search for the possibility of theory of rhythm of contemporary Korean poetry. The reason why Western concept of rhythm is very difficult to be realized in poetry written in Korean language is that conceptual idea-aspect-equivalent to rhyme of Western poetry does not exist in Korean language. Therefore, theory of rhythm of contemporary Korean poetry should be examined on the axis of, on the one hand, rhythmic possibility Korean language can have within the relation to classical poems/poems and songs, and on the other hand, abstracting the concept of rhythm by pioneer critics of poems who introduced Western concept of rhythm at the beginning of modern poetry. Rhythmic form of contemporary Korean poetry should be examined in, other than anything else, the characteristics of Korean language. This means that it should be examined on the premise that syntactic segment of Korean language is realized by rhythmic segment in a poem. To understand how the syntactic segment and rhythmic segment realized in a poem is explained as a poetic effect, however, we should access in dialectic viewpoint, that is, process of sublation or negation and creation without absolutizing rhythmic index/index of rhythm such as ‘syllabic metric system‘ or ‘feet metric system‘ of rhythmic theory in classical poems(poems and songs).
This paper examines rhythm as a repetitive index in linguistic features and also early and later poems of Jung Ji-Yong as a product of process of break from restrictions that rhythm has at the same time.
consciousness of Rhythm-Rhythmic consciousness of Jung Ji-Yong‘s poetry can hardly be limited to existing ‘four feet metric system‘ or ‘two feet metric system‘, and this is proved by the fact that Jung Ji-Yong‘s poetic consciousness, covering traditions and present ages in his poetry, is being prosified at the point where it reveals the sense of alienation of modern subject and inner patience which endures the very alienation.
