This thesis starts with the questions (a critical mind) as follows. Firstly, what was the nature of the Residency-General period in Korean modern history? Secondly, why did Korea degrade themselves to the status of a colony without national resistance such as an armed struggle during this period? Thirdly, researches on this period have been conducted separately between Korea and Japan, where they have given weight to each other's positions. Researches in Japan have been focused on the development procedure of its policy toward Korea and those in Korea have been centered on its resistance movement against Japan's policy. For better understanding on this period, however, researches should be done and restructured synthetically with priority given to the action and reaction of Japan(the Residency-General) and Korea.
The reaction of non-governmental intelligentsia should be examined thoroughly in order to analyze the response of Korea at that time. The Korean government was deprived of its autonomy under the rule of the Residency-General and King Gojong was isolated. Moreover, the people were not fully aware of their country's fate because they still remained in a state of premodern consciousness.
Based on the questions stated above, the thesis analyzes the developmental aspect of Korean nationalism by the medium of "self-reliance movement" developed under a protectorate regime of the Residency-General.
